October 2000
May 26
Yes, this is the "October Construction Journal" page, but we have to look back in time to May for comparison. This is the view of the southeast side of the construction area. There was no construction activity visible from the Webcam on this side until October.
September 29
Construction during September centered on the southwest side of the building. (See the September Construction Journal page.) At the very end of that month steel for the new elevator and stairway tower made its appearance in this view.
October 2
Additional steel is in place, framing the top of the new elevator and stairway tower. (Note the two steelworkers at the top.) This tower will provide access to ALL public levels of the Science Center: from the Changing Exhibit Gallery (the old main Exhibit Floor) at the very top of the building, to the Plaza and Lower Level exhibit floors, and to the IMAX Dome Theatre entrance at the very bottom.
October 3
What looks like a solid white sheet is actually corrugated metal reflecting sunlight. This forms the base for the floor of the Digital Dome Theater over which concrete will be poured. (Note the steel worker standing near the top of the tower.)
October 6
Metal to support the concrete floor of the new Plaza Level has been added. (The worker at the left is standing on the new Plaza.) The diagonal steelwork above the metal will support the Plaza roof. (The Lower Level is no longer visible, except for the dark triangle in the stairway tower.)
October 13
The worker is walking on the sheeting for the new roof. The level below him is the new Plaza, and the dark triangle below that is the Lower Level.
