Dow Foundation Life Sciences Laboratory
The New Detroit Science Center's Dow Foundation Life Sciences Laboratory explains the wonders of
nature with spectacular exhibits and interactive displays. Observe the similarities
between urban and rainforest ecosystems by comparing the wildlife that inhabits these
environments. Unleash the secrets of DNA and explore the workings of the microscopic
world.
Like the other Science Center laboratories, Life Sciences addresses subjects required
by the State of Michigan Curriculum Framework for Science Education, including cells, the
organization of living things, heredity and ecosystems.
Life Sciences covers approximately 5,000 square feet -- though perhaps it would be more
appropriate to think in volumetric terms, especially in the case of the amazing
Interactive Waterfall that cascades down the Science Center's two floors. A visual
association between life sciences and motion, the waterfall is programmed to make its
downward journey in a series of geometric shapes and letters, or visitors select water
patterns at its upper-level control center through simple hand movements. This lab also
houses Rainforest City, which provides a three-dimensional introduction to a rainforest
ecosystem. As you walk through this exhibit, you'll notice its structure becomes more
mechanical. Reaching this unfinished portion of the rain forest, you'll not only ponder
the ongoing destruction of such ecosystems, but also gain insight into the art and science
of exhibit construction.
Other exhibits include:
- Life's Innovations - features both live and sculpted creatures from the Central
American rain forest.
- The Hut - provides a simulated microscopic research experience through programs
and theater.
