BLAST OFF AT
THE NEW DETROIT SCIENCE CENTER
Ignite your desire for discovery with
the largest touring exhibit on space exploration at The New Detroit
Science Center now through Sept.10, 2006. SPACE: A Journey to Our Future will take
you on a fantastic voyage through the past, present and future of space
exploration. SPACE uses immersive scenic elements, the most advanced
interactive exhibits and state-of-the-art projection and audio technology to
bring the epic story of space exploration to life.
Along with many other exhibits, you will have the
opportunity to:
■ Step
back in time to see how early civilizations viewed our place in the
universe; meet Galileo and peer through his telescope to view Jupiter and
its moons,
■ See actual rocks from the moon and Mars,
■ Explore Mars Base Camp as you walk through a
full-size space habitat ,
■ Experience the rumble and pulsing of the mammoth
Saturn V rocket as you stand on the gantry, simulating a view from hundreds
of feet above the ground, just before launch,
■Watch through the window of the LEM to see what
astronauts saw descending to the surface of the moon,
■ Take a spin on a centrifuge that you power like a
bicycle,
■ Get an up-close look at a wide range of artifacts
from the space program,
■ Look far into the future of our exploration of the
universe in a 360-degree theatre,
■ Experience the past, present and future of space
through these and dozens of other displays, interactive elements and
experiences.
THE EXHIBIT IS DIVIDED INTO FOUR MAIN AREAS:
DARE
TO DREAM
Through the centuries, countless dreamers who
dared to find the answers to our very existence have shaped humankind's
knowledge of our place in the universe. This exhibit pays tribute to those
dreamers and their amazing achievements and will start us on our own journey
of discovery.
A
D REAM COME TRUE
To this day we are still awed by the image of the
Earth as seen from the moon during the Apollo program. For the first time we
saw our fragile place in the universe and we could not help but be changed
forever. This exhibit will remind us of that remarkable achievement and
introduce us to people who made that dream come true.
L IVING
THE DREAM
This series of exhibits will open our eyes to
the wonders of discovery that are taking place right now, all around us.
Today, all over the world, people and organizations are creating and
envisioning new tools and ideas that are helping us unlock many secrets to
the universe and that will propel us into our future adventures in space.
These people, and we as a planet, are truly living the dream!
D REAM
OF TOMORROW
The final portion of the exhibit will open our
eyes to the wonders that our future holds, and introduce us to today's
dreamers who, like those before them, dare to imagine what secrets the
Cosmos holds. Our journey into that future has many destinations and we will
become true inhabitants of the universe if we continue to dream of tomorrow.
Admission to the
exhibit, including Science Center General Admission, will be $13 for adults
and $10 for seniors and children, 2-12. Discounts are available for groups
and Science Center members.
For group
reservations, call 313-577-8400, option 5.
MAKE
SPACE A COMPLETE SCIENCE CENTER ADVENTURE!
JOURNEY
TO THE EDGE OF SPACE AND TIME
To
compliment SPACE: A Journey to our Future, the Science Center also
offers a new show in the Dassault Systmes Planetarium.
With the dawn of a new millennium, the pieces of
a great cosmic puzzle are falling into place, promising answers to questions
we once considered unanswerable: Is there an edge to space? Was there a
beginning to time? Are there other universes beyond our own waiting to be
discovered? What lies inside a black hole? Find out more as you Journey
to the Edge of Space and Time. Through the immersive experience of the
planetarium, audiences will journey to super massive black holes, giant
galaxy clusters, the universe's earliest moments and even to parallel
universes that challenge our imagination.
MAGNIFICENT
DESOLATION: WALKING ON THE MOON
Only 12 have walked on the moon, youre next! Exploring the moon was
humankinds most incredible journey. Now through the magic of IMAX,
audiences are transported to the lunar surface to walk alongside the
extraordinary astronauts who have been there. Experience what they saw,
heard, felt, thought and did. Presented and narrated by Tom Hanks,
Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon
features never-before-seen
photographs, previously unreleased NASA footage, CGI imaging and live-action
renditions of the lunar landscape to propel audiences nearly a
quarter-million miles above the Earths surface.
Space Camp
Scholarships to give teachers
a hands-on view of space technology
Seven Michigan
teachers will have the opportunity to attend Space Camp for
a full week this
summer courtesy of a scholarship program made available on behalf of
the national partners
of the exhibit, SPACE: A Journey to Our Future at The New Detroit
