The Search for Life in the Universe

Program Length: 50 minutes
Program Description:
Search for Life in the Universe will take you on a
virtual journey, visiting planets in search of
extraterrestrial life, probing into space with large
optical and radio telescopes, hunting new solar
systems forming in clouds of gas and dust in
space called nebulae (nebula in singular),
exploring the radio wavelengths for signals from
alien civilizations, and how the future discovery
of extraterrestrial life will affect humanity and our
own view of the universe and our place within.
Program Objectives:
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Identify what extra-terrestrial planets are,
and explain what extra-terrestrial life is;
- Explain the how astronomers are looking for
planets orbiting stars other than our Sun;
- Identify the electro-magnetic spectrum, and
how humanity uses each type of light;
- Understand the difficulties in searching and
communicating with civilizations existing on
other solar systems, and explain how
interstellar communications is possible.
- Explain how anyone with a computer and
Internet connection can assist in the Search
for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI)
