Senior Manager of Educational Programs

The Detroit Science Center is seeking a Senior Manager of Educational Programs. This position is responsible for the planning, development, oversight and implementation of many of the Science Center's content-based educational programs.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Supervise, lead, motivate and evaluate the:  Manager of Camps and Scouts,

Volunteer Manager, Children�s Gallery Manager and Science Educators

  • Develop and implement educational programs and educator workshops

  • Develop staff and implement exhibit related content activities.

  • Supervise certain full and part time science educator staff

  • Plan and manage a budget in coordination with VP of Science Programs.

  • Ability to manage and allocate resources at or below budget

  • Professionally and effectively represent the DSC in science meetings and seminars, media presentations and publications as requested

  • Professionally and effectively interact with the science, engineering and technology based professional, research and academic communities

  • Participate in the planning and implementation of new permanent exhibits and traveling exhibits

  • Maintain current knowledge of science trends and relevant applications of technology

  • Support the development, execution and reporting of science-related grants

  • Possess and display a spirit of curiosity, adventure and creativity with a passion for learning and sharing science content with children and the general public

  • Flexibility to work weekends, evenings and overnight duties

  • Perform other duties as requested to assist in the success of the Detroit Science Center

 

Education and Professional Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor�s Degree in Science, Science Education, or related field with a strong science emphasis
  • Experience in the development and implementation science programs in an informal learning environment
  • Proven ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities in and organized manner to ensure on-time delivery of all projects

IMAX Dome Theatre Manager  

The Detroit Science Center is seeking an IMAX Dome Theatre Manager.  We are seeking a talented, technically inclined, visitor service oriented and motivated individual to serves as the IMAX Manager.  This individual will work with the Vice President of Science Programs to set and achieve goals for the IMAX Theater.  The IMAX Manger will lead a team of individuals in choosing films, establishing best practices and delivering excellent customer experiences in the IMAX theatre.  

Essential Job Functions:

  • Supervise, train, evaluate the IMAX Chief Projectionist, First Projectionist, ushers and volunteers
  • Plan and implement IMAX screenings, previews and member events
  • Assist Vice President of Science Programs to set and meet attendance and revenue goals for the theatre.
  • Assist Marketing department with marketing campaigns
  • Responsible for the theater�s attendance reports, budgeting and financial management
  • Negotiate contracts and schedule IMAX show
  • Distribute timely and accurate  reports and surveys on the theater�s attendance and revenue to film companies and internal customers
  • Run the IMAX projector and present shows when necessary
  • Comfortable in a projection booth that is accessible by stairs/ladders
  • Possess excellent manual dexterity, eyesight and hearing
  • Able to lift and carry a maximum of 50 pounds boxes/cartons
  • Flexibility to work evening, nights and weekends
  • Travel within Michigan and out-of-state to meetings, conferences and conventions

 

Education and Professional Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor�s degree and/or 3 years experience in the theater, film or public presence

  • 3 years experience in staff and/or volunteer supervision

  • Proven written, verbal and interpersonal communication and public speaking skills.

Exhibit Content Developer

 

The Detroit Science Center is seeking two full time Exhibit Content Developers � one with a specialty in engineering/physical science and another specializing in medical science. 

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Research exhibit content to ensure scientific accuracy

  • Develop key messages for individual exhibits

  • Assist in the development of key messages for new exhibit areas

  • Implement tools to evaluate new and proposed exhibits and exhibit labeling

 The candidate must have a bachelor�s degree associated with the specialty area as well as experience simplifying complex topics for children or families.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Illustrator desired.

Exhibit Craftsmen

The Detroit Science Center is seeking a Shop Supervisor, Electronic Designers, Carpenters, Painters, Fabricators and Machinists. These full-time positions will assist the Director of Exhibits in exhibition development, fabrication and maintenance as it relates to electronic design.

  • Members of the team will create, design, fabricate and maintain all permanent and traveling exhibits

  • Construct interactive exhibits pertaining to design and installation of electrical wiring and switchgear, electronic components, AV and lighting systems integration, control systems and programming

  • Design and build exhibits from the design phase to installation

  • Serve as painters, carpenters and machinists according to assigned tasks.

  • Work collaboratively with the design team in creating and producing exhibition components

  • Use problem solving skills to help create solutions for exhibit issues through the exhibition fabrication process.

Exhibit Fabricator

The Detroit Science Center is seeking an exhibit fabricator to join the organization's Exhibits team. This position requires broad range of fabrication skills such as carpentry, metal smithing, knowledge of production methods and reading design and construction drawings. Candidate must have experience with interactive exhibits, including electromechanical interactive exhibits. Candidates must have a proven track record with minimum of five years experience.
