Children's Gallery Assistant  Part-time, Weekends

The Detroit Science Center is seeking a part-time, temporary assistant for the SBC Children�s Gallery.  This exciting and innovative gallery serves preschool and kindergarten age children.  It offers opportunities for children to explore and discover scientific principles through interactive play. This is a temporary position and requires weekend and evening hours. Starting wage is $9.00 per hour.

Background and Qualifications:

 

  • High school diploma and min. 30 credits college coursework

  • Educational background or experience in early childhood education

  • Exceptional ability to interact with children ages 2-6 years of age

  • Basic knowledge of physical sciences, life sciences, and earth sciences

  • Willingness to be an active contributor to programs of the Children�s Gallery

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability to be flexible to adjust to changing needs of the day

  • Ability to follow instructions and to work independently

  • Possess a spirit of curiosity, adventure, and creativity

�     Ability to lift 25 lbs.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends

  

 Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide information and direction within the Children�s Gallery

  • Provide support of programs including working with groups of children, teachers, and parents

  • Coordinate daily activities with other staff members

  • Prepare materials for activities in the gallery

  • Document activities in the gallery

  • Help with maintenance and clean-up of the gallery

  • Perform other duties as necessary

Greeter/Usher

 

The Detroit Science Center is seeking individuals to serve as greeters and ushers. Individuals are expected to greet visitors, orient groups, monitor the flow of traffic, serve as usher in the IMAX Dome Theater and take tickets for ticketed exhibits.

The greeter/usher is expected to be knowledgeable about all programs and exhibits and other aspects of general operating procedures as they pertain to visitors to the Science Center. This is a temporary position and requires weekend and evening hours. Starting wage is $7.50 per hour.

Candidates should have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Current high school or college student (must be 16 years of age or older)
  • Experience working with young children, educators and families
  • Good verbal communication skills
  • Previous customer service experience a plus
  • Must be dependable and have reliable transportation
  • Must be willing to work a flexible part-time schedule, including weekends and evenings

Ticketing Representative  

The Detroit Science Center is seeking individuals to serve as part-time ticketing representatives.  The Ticketing Rep will serve as cashier and ticket seller at the Science Center�s Front Desk.  He or she will be trained and will be expected to be knowledgeable about all programs and exhibits and other aspects of general operating procedures as they pertain to visitors to the Science Center.   This is a temporary position and requires weekend and evening hours. The starting wage is $8.00 per hour.

 Candidates should have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Completion of high school or equivalent educational certificate

  • Ability to work well with the general public, school personnel, students, and volunteers with ease and enthusiasm

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of employees, managers, and the general public

  • Ability to handle cash, checks and charges and count change

    Must be willing to work a flexible part-time schedule, including some weekends and special events
