2004 Scout Workshops

The New Detroit Science Center is offering outdoor fun for a variety of Boy and Girl Scout levels. Each Science of the Great Outdoors workshop includes Science Center general admission, workshop materials, a badge, a Science Center patch and an afternoon snack. Participants should dress for the weather, as many of the activities take place outside.

Cost: $15 per Scout
Time: 12:00 PM - 3:30 PM

  • Junior Girl Scouts: Frosty Fun
    Sunday, February 15

    Make snow sculptures. Look at snowflakes with a magnifying glass and create a snow painting. Learn about hypothermia and ice safety. Make a snow safety travel kit and do a natural insulation experiment.

  • Webelos: Naturalist
    Sunday, March 21

    Find out about the bird flyways closest to your home and find out which birds use these flyways. Identify poisonous plants and venomous reptiles. Learn about producers, consumers and decomposers in the food chain of an ecosystem and how to help protect the balance of nature.

  • Brownie Try-it: Eco-Explorer
    Saturday, April 3

    Explore nature to discover what a habitat is and what organisms live together. Learn about food chains and how to help wildlife by putting up bird nest boxes and feeders and making brush piles with leaves where animals can hide.

  • Junior Girl Scouts: Outdoors in the City
    Sunday, May 2

    Determine what urban wildlife lives in the city. Take a group walk and spruce up an area park. Cook with the "city" sun and create a piece of art about an outdoor urban area that you feel is beautiful.

  • Wolf Scouts: Outdoor Adventure
    Sunday, May 16

    Enjoy an outdoor picnic, treasure hunt and other fun games. Scouts also will learn how to identify poisonous plants and will find out what happens if they accidentally touch one.

One chaperone is required per 10 scouts. Chaperones for workshops are free according to the following ratio: 1 free/10 scouts. Additional adults/siblings are required to pay the full workshop fee.

Balance and final count is due two weeks before program. A maximum of 100 participants are allowed.
